| Course description |
| Animal welfare may be misunderstood as welfare for human using animals, such as animal therapy. Animal welfare is also apt to be confused with animal rights, but animal welfare is not necessarily the case of accepting animal’s rights. We have a responsibility to treat captive animals with consideration of welfare. In this course, each types of welfare for various kinds of captive animals, such as livestock, experimental animal, zoo animal, companion animal, working animal and wild animal in captivity, will be lectured. |

Shohei Takeda, Comparative Psychology (Welfare for Zoo animals) In spite of their wild origin, many of zoo exhibited animals are hold in extreme artificial environment. It is important for zoo animals being hold and exhibited not in the human-viewed naturalistic environment but in that of affording to 1. The difference of views for animal and life, between Western and Eastern World. Establishment of Zoological garden. Function of Zoological garden. 2. Environmental enrichment for ensuring the Quality of Life (QOL) of captive animals. Kaoru Suzuki, Field Science Center (Welfare for experimental animal, wild animal, and household animal) The position of these animals in human society, characteristic will be explained to present key facts for their welfare. In addition, proper animal experiment and appropriate euthanasia will be explained. 1. Experimental animal 2. Wild animal 3. Household animal 4. Animal experiment, Euthanasia Yuji Takemura, Animal Science (Animal welfare of farm animals) This section provides students with welfare issues for farm animals. Learners are expected to make their own opinions on how to realize the welfare-based practice for animal production and consumption. Contents: 1. Development of animal welfare in farm animals (Part 1) 2. Development of animal welfare in farm animals (Part 2) 3. Welfare problems and solutions in the modern farm animal production system 4. Scientific methods for the assessment of animal welfare Final Examination: final day of the course |
