Course description
Our body is able to eliminate microbial pathogens in many cases that we have never experienced. On the other hand, our body often elicits immune responses to harmless substances such as pollen and even our tissues. What is the difference between normal and abnormal responses? We discuss the mechanism to distinguish them.
Expected Learning
(1) Able to explain different compartments and roles of immune competent cells. (2) Able to understand and explain interaction between immune cells, and a way of ultimate immune responses. (3) Able to discuss about background and solutions of unresolved problems in this fields.
Course schedule
Week 1: Outlines and different compartments of immune cells (innate, acquired immunity).
Week 2: Structure of different isotypes of antibodies.
Week 3: Antigen-Antibody interaction. Maternal and transitional Antibody.
Week 4: Gene rearrangement of antigen receptors.
Week 5: Antigen recognition by T cells. Major histocompatibility complex (MHC).
Week 6: Structure of MHC and MHC restriction.
Week 7: Antigen presentation by MHC class I and II.
Week 8: Allele and haplotypes of MHC genes.
Week 9: Innate immunity (1) Toll-like receptors.
Week 10: Innate immunity (2) Complements.
Week 11: Allergy (type I).
Week 12: Allergy (types II, III, IV).
Week 13: Immunological tolerance and autoimmune diseases.
Week 14: Thymus and T cell development.
Week 15: Examination.
