Course description |
Participants of this course are expected to learn basic experimental techniques relating to biology necessary for environmental and natural resource science, such as, sample treatments, analysis and observation, as follows; - Microbiology: microscopic observation, growth of microorganism - Botany: observation of formation of herbs and woods - Zoology: observation of animal organs |
Expected Learning |
Participant should acquire and understand as follows; (1) right handling of experimental apparatus, (2) safety awareness for scientific experiments, (3) scientific principle of experiments dealing with this student principle, (4) absolute minimum rules for writing scientific reports. |
Course schedule |
1. Morphology and physiological properties of microorganisms: observation of bacteria (by Dr. Katayama & Dr. Tarao) Observation of some bacterial species in relation to (1) characteristics of colonies formed on agar plate, (2) morphology of Gram stained bacterial cells, and (3) physiological properties 2. Morphology of microorganisms: observation of fungi (by Dr. Yoshida) Microscopic observation of organ forming hyphae or conidia of representative fungi in order to understand property of fungal growth 3. Growth of microorganism: growth curve of bacteria (by Dr. Katayama & Dr. Tarao) Observation of bacterial growth in culture medium in order to understand property of microbial growth 4. Morphology of animals and plants: herbs (by Dr. Watanabe) Observation of morphology of plants especially in some organs 5. Morphology of animals and plants: trees (by Dr. Funada & Dr. Nakaba) To learn of technique for observation of morphology and function of primary and secondary tissues of trees as biomass resources dominating almost all biosphere 6. Morphology of animals and plans: animals (by Dr. Watanabe & Dr. Ohji) Observation and distinction of tissues and organs of vertebrate in order to understand their functions. Observation of biological effects of pollutants on invertebrate. 7. How to write scientific reports (by Dr. Tarao) Instruction of essential rules for writing scientific reports |
