Course description |
Main theme in this course is thermodynamics. Thermodynamics is required to understand changes in the chemical reaction. You will understand what factors regulate whether the chemical reaction takes place or not. The purpose of this course is to understand basic items of thermodynamics with examples of familiar phenomena. Beginning with conversion of units and gas state equation, you will understand the concepts in internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy and study spontaneity of chemical changes, based on the knowledge that you have obtained in chemistry courses in high school. This course “Physical Chemistry A” is a basis to learn other courses in specialized subjects. |
Expected Learning |
To achieve the level where you can understand the 1st, 2nd and 3rd law of thermodynamics. To achieve the level where you understand the concept of free energy and can judge whether a particular process is spontaneous or not. To achieve the level where you can understand chemical phenomena and biological phenomena from the view point of physical chemistry. |

Assessment/Grading |
Examination and attendance : 80 points (maximum point of attendance is 13) Report : 20 points It is up to students attended at the first class to include the attendance point into the final evaluation or not. More detail for explanation of the report will be informed in the first class. Dead line of the report is Nov.27th. The distribution of the grade in the past four years is described in remark 1. |
Message from instructor(s) |
Science is divided into 4 subjects (physics, chemistry, biology and geology) in high school. I know most of students didn’t learn all 4 subjects. However, nature should be understood comprehensively. Therefore, I recommend to learn various subjects in the field of natural sciences. I recommend to do the end-of-chapter exercises to develop problem-solving skills. |
Course keywords |
perfect gas equation of state, the first, second and third law of thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, Gibbs free energy |
Office hours |
I am available for 30 minutes after my lecture on Monday or Wednesday because I’m a part time lecturer. |
