Course description
The course introduces you to basic German vocabulary and grammar. You will learn the laws of grammar, read easy sentences, translate them into Japanese and write brief responses in German. After passing the final exam you are entitled to obtain a credit.
Native speakers of German are not permitted to register for this course.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. exchange daily greetings
2. pronounce words correctly
3. recite declensions of articles
4. look up conjugated verbs in a dictionary
5. look up declined nouns in a dictionary
6. read simple sentences in the present tense with the aid of a dictionary
7. have images of foreign languages and cultures other than those of English-speaking countries.

Course schedule
Week1: Course guidance. German alphabet.
Week2: Pronunciation 1.
Week3: Pronunciation 2. Personal pronouns in the nominative.
Week4: Conjugation of verbs in the present tense 1.
Week5: Conjugation of verbs in the present tense 2.
Week6: Gender, number and case of nouns. Definite and indefinite articles.
Week7: Imperative. Negative sentences and interrogative sentences.
Week8: Declension of personal pronouns. Cardinal numbers.
Week9: Declension of nouns in the singular and in the plural.
Week10:Demonstrative adjectives, indefinite adjectives, possessive adjectives etc.
Week11: Modal auxiliaries.
Week12: Prepositions 1.
Week13: Prepositions 2. Three principal parts of verbs.
Week14: Conjugation of verbs in the past tense.
Week15: Final exam.

Assessment/Grading
The roll will be called every week. You must not absent yourself more than 4 times.
The final grade will be assessed by the following criteria:
(i) Class participation and results of small tests ― 30%
(ii) Result of the final examination ― 70%
