Course description
In Part-Ⅰ, the study trends about environmental, regional history in Japan will be discussed. In Part- II, the transition of Satoyama scenery under the influence of utilization of forest resources.
Expected Learning
To obtain knowledge about the study trends of environmental, regional history and rural sociology in Japan.
Course schedule
This course is divided into two parts.

Part I From the viewpoint of environmental, cultural history
1. The change of the rural areas and livelihood after postwar in Japan
2. Theory of the living environment principle and environmental history
3. The study of subsistence in folklore and environmental history

Part II From the viewpoint of rural sociology
1. What is Satoyama?
2. From grassland to firewood forest
3. From firewood forest to planted forest

Assessment/Grading
The grade will be calculated by “the comment card”. “The comment card” is a card which the students should submit answering the lecturer’s questions in every lecture. The lecturer will select interesting cards among them and introduce them in the next class. If students’ “comment cards” are adopted, the submitters can receive added points in addition to the attendance points.
