Course description |
Generally, creating a sustainable society is required to get a resident and community sustainable. Due to the rapid development and depopulation or congestion, a lot of communities are losing the function to cooperate as a community. This course content will focus on what we are required to for creating a sustainable community with a method of social research and participant observation. |
Expected Learning |
To obtain a fundamental method of social research through community survey such as an on-the-spot investigation, interview, participant observation and workshop in Toyamago region (Toyamago consist from two regions which are Kamimura and Minamishinano) in Iida-city, Nagano prefecture. Also, course participants will learn how the residents and government of Iida city work on their region’s problems by conducting research. |
Course schedule |
All surveys will be conducted in Toyamago region in Iida city, Nagano prefecture. (1) Prologue 1. Guidance: What do we learn from a social research? (TSUCHIYA, ASAOKA, ENOMOTO, SAWA, TAKEMOTO,HAYASHI )(April 11th) (2) Method of a social survey 2. How to do a social survey (1) the meaning of conducting research in rural districts (TSUCHIYA) (April 18th) 3. How to do a social survey (2) Method of qualitative research, including interview method (ASAOKA) (April 25th) 4. How to do a social survey (3) Method of research in rural districts (TAKEMOTO) (May 2nd) 5. How to do a social survey (4) techniques for interviewing (SAWA) (May 9th) (3) Introduction of Iida city, Nagano prefecture 6. Relation between Iida city, Nagano prefecture and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology + preparation for preliminary research (1) (TSUCHIYA, ASAOKA, ENOMOTO, SAWA, TAKEMOTO,HAYASHI) (May 17th. Only this day, the class will be held on Wednesday instead of Tuesday). Participants will watch the movie “UBUTUCHI” and hear a lecture from Japanese hunter. 7. Relation between Iida city, Nagano prefecture and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology + preparation for preliminary research (2) (TSUCHIYA, ASAOKA, ENOMOTO, SAWA, TAKEMOTO,HAYASHI) (May 23rd) 【Preliminary research】Field study + Outcome and challenge of the practical training in 2016 (TSUCHIYA, ASAOKA, ENOMOTO, TSAKEMOTO,HAYASHI) (May 27th ~ May 28th ) 8. Recapitulation of the research (HAYASHI) (May 30th ) 9. Community development in Iida city (Iida City employee) (June 6th ) 10. Rural community development in Toyamago region(Iida City employee, Director of Kamimura and Minamishinano community center) (June 20th ) 11. Festival(Festa) of puppet show and theory of experiential community development (4) Make a research plan 12. Make research groups and arrange the research subject (HAYASHI+ASAOKA)(June 27th ) 13~15. Make research questionnaire (HAYASHI + other teacher) (July 4th,11th ,18th ) (5) Preparation 16. Prepare for the main research 【Main research】Main research (Three days within August 4th ~August 6th . The survey will be conducted in the weekends. The schedule will be adjusted.)※There will be a possibility of late(midnight) returning. ) *On August 4th , course participants will work as a staff for the puppet show festival. *Presentation of research results will be held on April~ May, 2017 (Detail will be announced in guidance) |
Prerequisites |
Course participants are required to do a field report (present the results of the research) at Iida city. Students desired to take the course in “Internship (Iida city)” will be required to have an interview with faculties individually. |
