Course description |
For the purpose of thinking about characters of natural science, this course surveys a historical development of natural science paying an attention to the social context. |
Expected Learning |
(1) Students will obtain a comprehensive image of science involving its history. (2) Based on the above-mentioned knowledge, students will have their own attitude to science of their time. (3) Students will describe their new image of science using their original sentences. |

Science in the Middle Ages(Text Page 44-63.)(The thema of first report is given. ) 5. 16-17th century : New image of the human body(Text Page 64-70, 79-96.) 6. 17th century : New image of universe(Text Page 71-78.) 7. 17th century : New theories of mechanics (Text Page 107-116.) 8. 17th century: Discovery of vacuum (Text Page 97-103.) & The midterm examination 9. 17th century: Formation of science community & the Industrial Revolution (Text Page 126-159.) (The thema of second report is given. ) 10. 18th century: Revolution in chemistry (Text Page 117-125, 150-156.) 11. 19th century: Development of atom theory (Text Page 185-192.) 12. 19th century: Discovery of conservation law of energy(Text Page 157-162, 177-184.) (The thema of third report is given. ) 13. 20th century: Introduction of quantum theory and new picture of the world (Text Page 202-207.) 14. 20-21th century: Nuclear energy and science of our time (Text Page 225-239.) 15. The final review and the final examination The exact date of the midterm examination will be announced 3 weeks before it will be done. Comment card on each lecture occasionally is handed. Three papers on given topics should be handed. |
Prerequisites |
High-school level knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology is required. |
