Course description |
The course provides the students to take on-the-job pathological necropsy training of various animals and to recognize pathological changes in companion and domestic animals though the anatomical and histological techniques. They will understand the basic skills on the macroscopical and histopathological diagnosis. |
Expected Learning |
1. Understand the skills for necropsy procedure, technical observation and recording of macroscopic findings in experimental animals. 2. Understand the outline of tissue preparation for histopathology such as fixation and trimming of animal tissues, and sectioning and staining of embedded tissue specimens. 3. Understand how to observe the tissue slides for histopathological assessment using a microscopy 4. Understand the morphological changes of the lesions in the circulatory system 5. Understand the morphological changes of the lesions in the hematopoietic system 6. Understand the morphological changes of the lesions in the respiratory system 7. Understand the morphological changes of the lesions in the digestive system |
Course schedule |
The following on-the-job training will be conducted. 1. Necropsy of experimental animals (normal animals and animals with diseases) 2. Tissue preparation for histopathology 3. Observations of histopathological slides 4. Observations of the lesions in the circulatory system 5. Observations of the lesions in the hematopoietic system 6. Observations of the lesions in the respiratory system 7. Observations of the lesions in the digestive system |
Prerequisites |
The students should have taken courses on veterinary anatomy, veterinary histology, veterinary physiology, veterinary biochemistry, veterinary microbiology, immunology, and general veterinary pathology. |
Required Text(s) and Materials |
The Japanese Society of Veterinary Pathology: Systemic Animal Pathology, 2nd Edition (Buneido Shuppan Co.Ltd.) The Japanese Society of Veterinary Pathology: Color Atlas of Animal Pathology, (Buneido Shuppan Co.Ltd.) Others: Documents distributed, if necessary |
References |
On-the-job manual of veterinary pathology, 2nd edition (The Japanese Society of Veterinary Pathology, Gakusosha., Co. Ltd.) |
Assessment/Grading |
Attendance, submission of reports (sketch), and tests for histopathological diagnosis using projected pathological images will constitute 40%, 20%, and 40% of your final grade, respectively. |
Message from instructor(s) |
Students should have studied well the contents in anatomy and histology classes at the 2nd grade, because knowledge of these courses is indispensable to them for conducting pathological diagnosis. They will use a textbook of Systemic Animal Pathology, which covers the contents in on-the-job pathological program. |
