Course description |
[This lecture will be discussed in Japanese.] The purpose of this lecture is to consider the characteristics and the establishing process of the civilization, which appeared in Japan in the Edo era. Recently, this civilization has attracted attention as a recycling-based civilization, and it has been said that it will be one of the important analysis subjects in considering the environmental history of Japan. In this class, I’d like to think about the features of Japanese traditional culture and society. |
Expected Learning |
It has been said that the traditional culture of Japan has one of the origin in the civilization in the Edo era. In this class, I will survey the characteristics of this civilization, showing the agriculture, the inhabitants’ culture, the traditional rural landscapes and so on. Through these points, I’d like to show the characteristics and the historical backgrounds of the traditional Japanese culture. |
Course schedule |
TThe structure of this lecture will be as follows. Introduction -the characteristics of Japanese civilization in the Edo era- Ⅰ The position of the civilization of the Edo era in world history Ⅱ. The cultural characteristics of Japanese civilization in the Edo era. (1)The ability of the literacy and calculation and the traditional Japanese civilization. (2)The red-tapism and the traditional Japanese civilization (3)The educations and children in the traditional Japanese civilizaetion (4)The appearance of the “children” in the traditional Japanese civilization (5) The decrease of birth per a family and the traditional Japanese civilization (6) The families and villages in the traditional Japanese civilization Ⅲ.The traditional rural landscapes and the traditional Japanese civilization in the Edo era (1) The structure of villages in the traditional Japanese civilization (2) The cultural history of “Satoyama” ①The cultural history of “Heichirin” (flatland forest) ② The cultural history of “Karishikirin” (farm forest) ③The cultural history of “Kusayama” (grass-covered plain for farming) |

Assessment/Grading |
The grade will be calculated by the comment cards. Throughout the course, the lecturer will raise a question to the participants and ask you to write the answer on the comment cards every class. The lecturer will check them and add points to the proper comment cards. And the lecturer will select interesting cards among them and introduce them in the next class. If students’s comment cards are adopted, the submitters can receive added points. However, this comment cards aren’t the attendance cards. The unsuitable comment cards can’t be the object to be graded. |
