Course description |
Chemistry is the study about the composition, structure, properties and change of chemical substances, which are composed of various atoms and molecules. In this lecture, explanations for the essential structures and properties of various atoms and molecules are given. |
Expected Learning |
Participants can understand 1) structures and properties of atoms, 2) chemical bonds and molecular structures, 3) three states and properties of substances, 4) chemical equilibrium, 5) theories of acids and bases, and 6) redox reactions. |
Course schedule |
1st Lecture: Explanation of the present lecture, and Introduction to the present lecture:physical units, significant figure, and dimensional analysis (textbook pp1-15) 2nd Lecture: Chemical structures of substances, and Concept of "amount of substance (mole)" (textbook pp16-46) 3rd Lecture: Three states of substances, and Solutions (textbook pp47-62, 65-74) 4th Lecture: Kinetic Theory of Gases (textbook pp62-65) 5th Lecture: Stoichiometry, and Theories of acids and bases?part 1 (Arrhenius theory, Bronsted?Lowry theory, textbook pp75-104) 6th Lecture: Theories of acids and bases?part 2 (Lewis theory, HSAB rules, textbook pp104-111) 7th Lecture: Redox reactions (textbook pp112-124) 8th Lecture: Midterm test (The contents of 2nd?7th lectures are on the test) 9th Lecture: Structures of atoms?part 1 (Bohr model, de Broglie hypothesis, Wave dynamics, textbook pp125-139) 10th Lecture: Structures of atoms?part 2 (Atomic orbital, textbook pp139-164) 11th Lecture: Periodic table?part 1 (Properties of atoms, textbook pp165-189) 12th Lecture: Periodic table?part 2 (Reactivities of elements and compounds), and Chemical bonds?part 1 (Ionic bond and Covalent bond, textbook pp192-204, 207-214, 217-221) 13th Lecture: Chemical bonds?part 2 (Molecular orbital, textbook pp214-217, 223-257) 14th Lecture: Interaction (textbook pp286-302) 15th Lecture: Final test (The contents of all lectures are on the test) |
