Course description |
Electrons play a key role in chemical reactions. They are also relavent to properties of solid materials. Therefore understanding on how electrons behave in molecules or solid materials is quite important. In this lecture, we understand basics of quantum chemistry. |
Expected Learning |
The followings should be understood. 1. Why do we need quantum chemistry? 2. wave nature of electrons 3. Schrodinger equation 4. Chemical bondings and electrons |
Course schedule |
(The schedule would be changed depending on situation.) 1. Condtradiction in classical mechanics (some examples). 2. Schrodinger equation and wavefunction 3. Restriction on wavefunctions. Operater and eigenfunction 4. Superposition of wavefunctions, Heisenberg uncertainty principle 5. Exercises 6. Wavefunction for particle in a box (1-dimensional) 7. Tunnelling and particle in a box (2-dimensional) 8. Midterm exam. 9. Rotation and quantification of orbital angular momentum 10. Quantum numbers and orbitals of an electron 11. Multielectron aton and Pauli principle 12. Molecular orbital theory and variation principle 13. Huckel approximation 14. Comments on exercises and summary 15. Final exam. |
Prerequisites |
Students need to understand fundamentals of differencial equations, mechanics and electromagnetics。 |
