Course description |
Mechanics of Materials deals with the deformation behavior of solid objects like mechanical structures subjected to loads and constraints. Students learn the basic knowledge of deformation and strength of materials in order to design mechanical structures. This lecture has two parts, i.e. Mechanics of Materials I and II. In Mechanics of of Materials II, various problems of bending system and combined stress state are discussed. |
Expected Learning |
The aim of this lecture for students is to (1) understand basic concepts of the strength and the rigidity. Students are also required to (2) solve simple problems about the bending of beam. |
Course schedule |
1. General guidance: Review of Mechanics of Materials I and tutorial for this lecture. 2. Bending of beam (1): Deflection of the beam (review continued) 3. Bending of beam (2): Singular function and its application to bending problem 4. Bending of beam (3): Determinate and indeterminate problems 5. Bending of beam (4): Principle of superposition 6. Bending of beam (5): Beam supported by spring and continuous beam 7. Buckling of column 8. Mid-term examination 9. Castigliano's theorem (1) 10. Castigliano's theorem (2) 11. Curved beam 12. Combined stress state 13. Principle stress and Mohr's stress circle 14. Stress-strain relation under combined stress state 15. Criterion of fracture under combined stress state |
