Course description
In this lecture, by referring to the actual study results, students will learn how the study of animal behavior that had been considered non-academic until mid 20th century has become a successful branch of biological sciences and how diverse phenomena from e.g. selfishness of genes to evolution of moral systems are currently being explored.
Expected Learning
(1) Be able to correctly explain what natural selection is.
(2) Be able to understand that, as well as morphological and physiological traits, animal's behavior is an adaptive genetic trait.
(3) Be convinced that it is necessary to study the behavior of nonhuman organisms and compare it with that of human in order to understand the evolution of human behavior.
Course schedule
Classes will be given in an intensive course.

(3) Classic study in ethology by Tinbergen
(4) Classic study in ethology by Frisch
(5) Bee studies after Frisch
(6) Evolution of animal behavior by natural selection: Darwin, Galapagos and the Origin of Species
(7) Principles and examples of natural selection
(8) Behavioral ecology 1: Evolution of infanticide
(9) Behavioral ecology 2::Sexual selection, sexual ornaments, mate guard, etc.
(10) Social evolution: Evolution of altruism (Darwin's dilemma)
(11) Cooperation among non-relatives, Tajfel's experiments, Robert Trivers and reciprocal altruism
(12) Cooperation between relatives, inclusive fitness and Hamilton's rule
(13) Helpers in vertebrates
(14) Workers and soldiers in invertebrates
(15) General discussion
