| This course provides students with microbial and pathogenic characteristics of insect pathogens and microbial control of insect pests. |
| Expected Learning |
| Understanding of characteristics of insect pathogens, techniques for diagnosis of insect diseases, pathogenesis of insect diseases, and development of fungi and baculoviruses as microbial insecticides. |

Lectured by Dr Mitsuaki Shimazu On 10th of Oct (10.30am-12am) at 2-gokan 1F multi-purpose room, 17th of Oct (9.30am-15.00) at Takao and 24th of Oct (13.00-16.15) at multi-purpose room 1) About natural enemies. Overview: taxonomy of fungi and positioning of entomopathogenic fungi. 2) Overview: general process of fungal infections on insects and the insect defense systems. 3) Overview: biology and general life cycles of entomopathogenic fungi. 4) Specifics: characteristics and life cycles of major species of entomogenous Entomophthorales. 5) Specifics: characteristics and life cycles of major species of "Cordyceps". 6) Specifics: characteristics and life cycles of major species of entomogenous anamorphic Ascomycete. 7) Advantages of insect pathogens in pest control. 8) Advantages and disadvantages of fungi as a biocontrol agent compared with other entomopathogens. 9) Examples of fungi for microbial control of pest insects. Field tour for finding insects killed by fungi, and isolation of fungal pathogens. Lectured by Dr Madoka Nakai On 1st of Nov 10.30-12.00 at 2nd lecture building-22 and every Wednesday 2 ji genme. 1) General lecture for pathology of insect viruses and its uses for biological control agents. 2) Active learning to construct research program related to host-pathogen interaction. 3) Special lecture in English by Laila Gasmi PhD |
