Course description
Learn the basics of band structure of semiconducting materials and then browse the principle structures and characterization methods of semiconductor devices.
Expected Learning
Gain quantum mechanical understanding of electronic structure of solid, and principle understanding of semiconductor devices.

1. Fundamental quantum mechanics
2. Bound electrons and tunneling effect
3. Kronig Penney model and band structure
4. Band structure viewed in terms of chemical bonds
5. Brillouin zone and three-dimensional band structure
6. Fermi-Dirac distribution and density of state
7. Effective mass of electron
8. Classical and quantum descriptions of conductivity
9. Fermi level of semiconductors
10. Intrinsic semiconductor and extrinsic semiconductor
11. Hall effect and thermoelectronic effect
12. Junction and semiconductor devices
13. Electronic characteristics of semiconductor junction

Requires basic understanding on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics
