Course description
Based on fundamental physics learned at the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, we will introduce necessary contents for graduate students, regardless of major of each student, in the master’s program, including topics as a mechanical system view point, in response to the fundamental physics principle.
Dividing contents into four parts, we aim at the establishment of their fundamental understandings related to its based, advanced study (core and advanced subjects).
Expected Learning
Based on fundamental physics learned at the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, we will make graduate students understand fundamental laws of wave/diffusion, electromagnetics, dynamics of mass system and rigid, quantum mechanics through related topics on mechanical system, and also make them to solve related problems.
Course schedule
In the first half lectures, topics on diffusion/heat conductivity and wave phenomena by Shinohara, and in the second half, those on electromagnetics, dynamics of mass system and rigid, and quantum mechanics with optics by Iwami will be discussed.

First Lecture: physical phenomena and classification of equations, diffusion and heat conductivity equations
Keywords: linear partial differential equation, separation of variables

Second Lecture: diffusion equation
Keywords: Brownian motion, Langevin equation, Fick’s law

Third Lecture: diffusion equation and its solution
Keywords: collision, Fourier analysis, superposition

Fourth Lecture: heat conductivity equation and its solution
Keywords: Fourier’s law

Fifth Lecture: wave equation
Keywords: oscillation and wave, elastic wave,

Sixth Lecture: examples of wave equation
Keywords: longitudinal and transverse waves, seismic wave, propagating and standing waves, dispersion relation and velocity

Seventh Lecture: first assignment and test

Eighth-Ninth Lectures: alternate current circuit, Maxwell equations, electromagnetic wave equation, optics
Keywords: RLC circuit, Biot-Savart Law, Ampere Law, electromagnetic fields, Gauss theorem, Stokes’s theorem, reflection/transmission/refraction, interference, diffraction, polarization, microscopy and diffraction limit

Tenth-Eleventh Lectures: dynamics of mass system and rigid
Keywords: equation of motion involving mass changes, rocket equation, fundamental and coupled oscillation, active vibration absorber, moment of inertia

Twelfth -Thirteenth: quantum mechanics and optics
Keywords: wave and particle, Schrodinger equation, square well potential and energy eigenvalue, physical value and operator, tunneling effect, scanning tunneling microscopy, periodic potential and energy band,

Fourteenth: second assignment and test

Fifteenth: overall drill
Prerequisites
It is advisable to take the subjects such as “Physics Basics”, “Physics Basics and Exercises,” “Statics,” “Dynamics” and “Electromagnetics.”
Required Text(s) and Materials
No particular recommendation. References will be introduced when necessary.
References
No particular recommendation. References will be introduced when necessary.
Assessment/Grading
We will grade the assignments, tests and reports in the first and second halves of lectures, and may consider an attendance situation in addition. Any comments and questions are welcome.
Message from instructor(s)
Although contents include the brush-up learned at the undergraduate course, we expect the students with a sense of tension because of new contents introduced.
Course keywords
wave/diffusion, electromagnetics, particle/rigid dynamics and quantum dynamics
