Course description
After reviewing fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer engineering, how to solve turbulent heat transfer field is explained. Governing equations, turbulence models, and numerical methods are explained.
Expected Learning
1. Review of fundamental thermal engineering and fluid mechanics which have to be understood by graduates of mechanical engineering department.
2. Understanding of fundamental turbulent heat transfer.
3. Understanding of basis for numerical simulation of turbulent heat transfer.
Course schedule
The course is designed as follows:
Week 1-4 Fundamental fluid mechanics: Basic idea of fluid and derivation of governing equation of fluid flow
Week 5-7 Fundamental heat tranfer engineering: Basic ideas of heat transfer and deribation of governing equation of energy transport
Week 8-9 Transfer of heat, mass, and momentum: Heat transfer with phase change, analogy among heat, mass, and momentum transers
Week 10-13 Transport phenomena due to turbulent flow: Fundamental ideas, governing equations, transport mechanics, and modelling of turbulent flow
Week 14-15 Numerical methods for thermal fluids engineering: Finite difference method, and some other methods (Due to time limitaion, this may be omitted.)
Prerequisites
It is assumed that Thermal Engineering", "Heat Transfer", and "Fluid Mechanics" are already finished in undergraduate course. Knowledge of partial differential equation is required.
