Course description
This course provides students with biophotonics on the basis of physical optics in natural phenomena. The topics covered are physics of ‘light’ and related natural phenomena, animal communication, in honey bee and cuttlefish, and the advanced technologies.
Expected Learning
Students who successfully master this course will be able to:
・Understand physical optics in natural phenomena and related advanced technologies around us.
・Understand the relation between animal communication and perception of vision and optical phenomena in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Course schedule
1. Introduction to biophotonics
2. What’s light? -Basis of physical Optics in natural phenomena-
3. Recent topics related to advanced photonics ?Plant factory-
4. Polarization of light ?Liquid crystal display and polarization perception-
5. Scattering of light (I) ?Rayleigh scattering and principle of sunset and blue sky?
6. Scattering of light (II) ?Sky compass and waggle dance of the honey bee?
