Course description
“Colloid phenomenon in soils”

It is important to understand the interaction between water and clay, when we come to deal with solid-liquid separation and transport phenomena of the suspension observed in aqueous environment such as in lakes, channels and rivers. Through this lecture, you will study basis of dispersion and flocculation which control the transport property of the suspension as well as flow settling property of the turbid water will be explained.
Expected Learning
Students are expected to learn the physiochemical behavior of turbid water in aqueous environment such as in lakes, channels and rivers and to understand sedimentation and flow phenomenon in suspended solid.
Course schedule
1. Features of clays as colloid
(1) Classification (2) Motion (3) Sedimentation and diffusion
2. Stability and flocculation of clays
(1) Density of charge (2) Electrokinetic properties (3) Interaction between different clays
3. Transport phenomenon in turbid water
(1) Sedimentation (2) Flow behavior
Prerequisites
