Course description |
This course provides an overview of the chemical basis of biomolecules and covers topics on enzyme kinetics, the characterization of major metabolic pathways, and their interconnection into tightly regulated networks. |
Expected Learning |
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. Illustrate the structure, function and chemical reactivity of important biomolecules 2. Discuss the mechanisms of enzymes to drive reactions 3. Outline how and why cells and organisms regulate their metabolism |

1. Introduction to Biochemistry: Biomolecules and Water 2. Amino Acids, Peptides and Protein Structure 3. Protein Function and Evolution: Hemoglobin, Immunoglobulin and Molecular Motors 4. Enzymes: Biological Catalysts and Chemical Logic of Metabolism 5. Structure and Classification of Carbohydrates and Lipids 6. Glycolysis and Gluconeogenesis 7. Glycogen Metabolism and the Pentose Phosphate Pathway 8. The Citric Acid Cycle and Oxidative Phosphorylation 9. Lipid Metabolism I: Fatty Acids, Triacylglycerols and Steroids 10.
