Course description |
Utilization of biomass has been promoted as renewable energy which can alternate fossil energy like oils because it has carbon neutral characteristics and is also renewable resource. Some problems are pointed out that centralizing biomass scattered widely may not contribute to control global warming and conflicting between foods and biofuels. The followings will be explained on the basis of the abovementioned issues; the significance of biomass energy use in Japan, the economic aspect and political strategy, challenges on international corporation, biomass production system in agriculture and forestry, collection and processing of biomass, energy and material flow analysis, relationship between natural ecosystem, regional try to use biomass. |
Expected Learning |
1. Understand the relationship between use of biomass and agriculture/forestry production activities, conserving natural ecosystem and global environment. 2. Understand present situation and challenges on the necessary technologies and system for producing/utilizing biomass. 3. Understand the social system, political strategies, regional efforts and international corporation for the use of biomass. |
Course schedule |
1. Why now for discussing biomass? (1) Serious problems of energy and environment. (2) Present situation and prospection on production of biomass. (3) Economical evaluation of biomass energy. (4) Political effort on biomass use in Japan. (5) Regional effort on cyclical use of biomass. (6) Advanced projects of biomass use in Japan and world. (7) Future strategy for coexistence of foods and biomass. 2. Issues on biomass energy and international corporation in developing countries. (1) Tropic Asia: recycling agricultural waste in Vietnam, prospect of JICA grass-root activities for international corporation. (2) Tropic America: Brazilian international strategy on biomass use and relationship between Japan and Brazil. 3. Production and use of herbal biomass. (1) Present situation of herbal biomass production in Japan and the world. (2) Production system of non-conflict herbal biomass with foods. (3) Development and improvement of herbal biomass; miscanthus and bioenergy rice. 4. Production and use of woody biomass. (1) Production system of woody biomass. (2) Energy balance of woody biomass use. (3) Converting technologies from biomass to bioenergy. 5. Converting technologies and system for biomass use. (1) Converting technologies to biofuels. (2) Converting systems for heat, electricity and mechanical energy. (3) Challenges and prospect of energy conversion from biomass. (4) Material flow and energy flow in biomass system. (5) Environmental load in biomass system. (6) Green biomass project at TUAT |
