Course description
Natural products produced by plants and microorganisms exhibit variety of biological activities due to their structural diversity, which originates from their biosynthetic steps. In this lecture, key enzymes in terpenoid biosynthesis will be introduced focusing on their reaction mechanism leading to terpenoid structural diversity.
Expected Learning
To understand the enzyme reaction mechanism and the origin of structural diversity among terpenoid natural products.
Course schedule
The main topic of the lecture is terpene synthases, key enzymes in terpenoid biosynthesis, which catalyze the terpene cyclization reaction. Especially, the lecture will focus on triterpene synthases, which produce precursors for saponins and steroids in various medicinal plants.
