Course description
This course provides students with the views regarding the process of animal development and its regulatory mechanism. The basic processes of animal development, including germ cell formation, fertilization, cleavage, blastula formation, gastrulation, and organogenesis, will be introduced. This course also addresses the genetic mechanisms underlying the establishment of the body plan and brain formation in vertebrates and Drosophila.
Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
(1) Describe the basic aspects of early animal development, organogenesis, brain formation, and neurogenesis.
(2) Describe the mechanism of animal development at the level of genes and proteins.
(3) Explain a variety of the processes of animal development mainly in vertebrates and Drosophila.
Course schedule
(1) Basic concepts of animal developmental biology.
(2) Genetic regulation of animal development.
(3) Analysis of gene functions in animal development.
(4) Developmental genetics.
(5) Germ cell development and fertilization
(6) Cleavage, blastulation, and gastrulation.
(7) Formation of three germ layers and organogenesis.
(8) Early development of Drosophila.
(9) Anteroposterior patterning during early Drosophila development.
(10) Segmentation and somite specification during Drosophila development.
(11) Development of fish and amphibia.
(12) Development of amniotes (chick and mice).
(13) Axis formation in vertebrate development.
(14) Neural induction and head formation.
(15) Brain regionalization and neurogenesis.
Prerequisites
Students entering this class are assumed to have had classes on basic biology, including basic molecular biology.

Message from instructor(s)
There is tight limitation to what can be addressed in this course, and students are expected to actively study this field in addition to taking this course. Questions are welcome during the lecture and thereafter, and also by mail (kyamasu(at)mail.saitama-u.ac.jp).
