Course description |
In this lecture, the regulation mechanism for nutrients metabolism in mammals, including human, are discussed, in relation to endocrine systems. Metabolic disorder often causes life style-related diseases, such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer and hypertension. The occurrences of these diseases are closely related to dairy eating habits. In this lecture, the mechanism for and therapies of these diseases are also discussed. |
Expected Learning |
Learners who successfully complete this lecture will understand metabolic pathways of nutrients and regulation mechanism of metabolism in our body. They also have some insights into relationships between eating habits and life style-related diseases. |
Course schedule |
The schedule of this lecture is as followed. 1) Introduction (nutrition, physiology, homeostasis) 2) About endocrine system: intercellular signaling pathway 3) The definition, classification and characteristic of hormones. 4) The structures and biosynthesis pathway of hormones 5) Intracellular signaling pathway 1 (second messengers, G protein-coupled receptors) 6) Intracellular signaling pathway 2 (receptor tyrosine kinase pathway, small G protein) 7) Insulin and Insulin-like growth factor 8) Glucose metabolism and diabetes 1 (symptoms, mechanism of onset) 9) Glucose metabolism and diabetes 2 (drugs and remedies for diabetes) 10) Metabolic syndromes 1 (obesity, adipose tissues and lipid metabolism) 11) Metabolic syndromes 2 (energy metabolism and regulation of apptite) 12) The regulatory mechanism of gene expression in mammal (transcription factors) 13) The mechanism of actions of steroid hormones 14) Immune systems (cytokine, signal transduction pathway in immune cells) 15) Epigenetical regulation by nutrients |
