Course description
The focus of this lecture is the basic knowledge on polymers such as polymer structures, methods of polymerization and processing of polymers, their properties.
Expected Learning
The aim of this lecture is to make students to obtain the basic knowledge on polymer science such as polymer structures, polymerization reactions, properties of polymers.
Course schedule
1. Schedule and an introduction of the lecture (Definition of polymers: the type of polymer: nomenclature: processing method)
2. Structure of macromolecules (structure of polymer chain, crystalline and amorphous polymers, polymer structure and its properties)
3. Degree of polymerization (Measurement of average molecular weight)
4. Polycondensation and polyaddition I (condensation type and addition type, kinetics of polycondensation)
5. Polycondensation and Polyaddition II (polymerization method, stepwise polymerization, gelation of 3-D polymers)
6. Radical Polymerization I (outline of polymerization reaction)
7. Radical Polymerization II (kinetics (rate of polymerization, estimation of degree of polymerization))
8. Radical copolymerization (Mayo-Lewis’s formula, kinetics of copolymerization, Q-e value)
9. Ionic polymerization (cationic, anionic, living polymer) and coordination polymerization
10. Natural Polymer I (protein and nucleic acid)
11. Natural Polymer II (polymeric carbohydrate, lignin, natural rubber)
12. Polymer Reaction I (classification and characterization of polymer reaction, thermal or light-induced degradation of polymers, biodegradation, recycling)
13. Polymer reaction II (chemical reaction of polymer side chain, functionalization of polymer by chemical modification)
