Course description
Many kinds of macromolecular materials that have useful mechanical and thermal properties make our daily life comfortable. In this class, we will learn viscoelasticity and glass transition phenomena to understand characteristic mechanical and thermal properties of polymeric materials, which are never observed in low mass substances. Moreover, rubber elasticity, one of the most striking mechanical properties of macromolecules, is also discussed.
Expected Learning
1) Understanding of basic theory of (linear) viscoelasticifty.
2) Understanding of genaral thermal properties of macromolecular materials.
3) Understanding of rubber elasticity.
Course schedule
1) Introduction to viscoelasticity
2) Elementary mechanical models
3) Viscoelastic spectra
4) Important viscoelastic parameters (zero-shear viscosity, average relaxation time, and steady state compliance)
5) viscoelastic properties of macromolecules (time-temperature superposition principle)
6) Glass transition of macromolecules
7) Thermodynamics of rubber
8) Statistical mechanics of rubber
9) Summary

Prerequisites
Fundamentals of mechanics and thermodynamics would be necessary. However, the essential knowledge will be provided when it is necessary.
