Course description
This workshop "Charcoal and Agriculture" offers practical exercises to learn how to use wood charcoal and rice husk charcoal in agriculture. Charcoal is known as soil amendment to improve physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil. In this class, we examine the effect of charcoal organic fertilizer using livestock manure and charcoal on crop growth through a pot experiment.
Expected Learning
1. To understand the basic theory and practices of charcoal and biochar making.
2. To understand various applications of charcoal and biochar in agriculture and discuss their potentials.
3. To examine the effect of charcoal organic fertilizer on crop growth through a pot experiment.
Course schedule
1. Introduction: Charcoal-making and charcoal application in agriculture
2 to 4. Making charcoal organic fertilizer
5 to 10. Monitoring a pot experiment and its evaluation
(if rainy, we learn about international cooperation using charcoal, charcoal application in global environment.)
Prerequisites
Please prepare for outdoor works.
