Course description
The curriculum of Department of Ecoregion Science has various courses of the practicals, the experiments, and the researches in the field. To reach purposes of these course, students will be required sufficient knowledge and skills for safety management in the fieldwork. This course provides the fundamental knowledge for safety management and the first aid skills in the fieldwork.
Expected Learning
The learning experiences and activities in the course are designed to enable students to:
1. Define and describe the attitude to safety management in field activities.
2. Identify and explain the risk factors in the fieldwork.
3. Gain the skills needed to first aid (CPR and AED).
4. Gain the skills needed to use farm tools.
Course schedule
This course is fifth period (16:30-18:00) Monday in the room of Lecture Hall 1.

April 16 - May 14 Lecture
Apr 16 Orientation, Safety management in fieldwork (M. Shimoda)
Apr 23 Wild animals and risk management in fieldwork (S. Koike)
Apr 30 Vegetation and risk management in fieldwork (M. Yoshikawa)
May 7 Risk management in social research (M. Nakajima)
May 14 Human errors and risk management in fieldwork (T. Matsumoto)

May 21 - June 11
Practical 1: Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and how to use Automated External Defibrillator (AED) (M. Shimoda and H. Fukumoto)
Practical 2: How to use Field Tools (T. Matsumoto)
☆Students will be divided into four groups. Each group attend the Practicals 1 and 2, biweekly.

June 12 - July 24 Paper report
Prerequisites
This course is required for ECO-TOP program.

Safety manual for fieldwork (booklet with an orange cover) and handouts will be provided in class.
References
The instructors will introduce reference books relevant to their topics in class.
Assessment/Grading
You must fulfill following three:
1. Two or less absences.
2. Participate in practicals 1 and 2.
3. Hand in paper report.

Evaluation standards are determined from the sum (100 % possible) of Participation (up to 60%) and Paper report (up to 40%).
