Aim: The aim of this course is to understand scientifically and comprehensively the conditions of a forest ecosystem that consists of living parts (i.e. trees, mammals, insects, microorganisms etc.), non-living parts (environmental factors), and their interactions. Summary: This course provides the topics of 1) the concept and characteristics of forest ecosystems, 2) material production and nutrient cycling, 3) living organisms that constitute forest ecosystems, and 4) the interactions between the biotic and abiotic factors in the systems, and thus resulting in developing a better judge of forest ecosystems. |

| You will obtain the basic knowledge for sound growth of forests and for evaluation of soundness of them, by understanding the rules of forest ecosystems. |

1-2. Outline of forest ecosystems The concept of forests, forming conditions, and the classification and distribution of forests. The concept of ecosystems, structure and function of ecosystems, and the characteristics of forest ecosystems. Temperature, winds, microclimatic modification, and environment inside forests. Water, evapotranspiration, and watershed conservation. 3-4. Material production and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems Material production, biomass, production structure, and production rate in forest ecosystems. Nutrient cycling, decomposition, and dynamics of nutrients in forest ecosystems. 5-12. Living components of forest ecosystems and their functional roles Classification and characteristics of trees, structure, succession, and regeneration of trees. Interaction between trees and environmental factors and their roles in forest ecosystems. Classification and characteristics of mammals and birds in forest ecosystems. Roles of mammals and birds in forest ecosystems. Classification and characteristics of insects and soil invertebrates in forest ecosystems. Roles of insects and soil invertebrates in forest ecosystems. Classification and characteristics of microorganisms in forest ecosystems. Roles of microorganisms in forest ecosystems. 13-15. | Evaluating the submitted five reports of 1) Material production and nutrient cycling,, 2) Trees, 3) Mammals, 4) Insects and soil invertebrates, 5) Microorganisms in forest ecosystems: the each score accounts for 20% of the total scores. Students who attend less than 70% of this course can not get this credit. |
