Course description
Aim: The final goal of this course is to think and discuss sustainability of tourism with understanding history of tourism in Japan from the Edo era ( the 17th century- ) to the present.

Summary: The course provides: 1) Theoretical characteristics of tourism; 2) history of tourism in Japan; 3) Comparison of mass tourism and alternative tourism (Green Tourism and Ecotourism).
Expected Learning
You will obtain another perspective of tourism which is very popular and familiar among people but rarely recognized objectively and historically.

Class 1: Guidance and definition of the related words: tourism; travel; journey; leisure; recreation and etc.
Class 2: Academic theory of tourism
Class 3-6: History of tourism in Japan
Class 7: Mass tourism and sustainability
Class 8: Alternative tourisms
