Course description
Generally, creating a sustainable society is required to get a resident and community sustainable. Due to the rapid development and depopulation or congestion, a lot of communities are losing the function to cooperate as a community. This course content will focus on what we are required to for creating a sustainable community with a method of social research and participant observation.
Expected Learning
To obtain a fundamental method of social research through community survey such as an on-the-spot investigation, interview, participant observation and workshop in Toyamago region (Toyamago consist from two regions which are Kamimura and Minamishinano) in Iida-city, Nagano prefecture. Also, course participants will learn how the residents and government of Iida city work on their region’s problems by conducting research.
Course schedule
All surveys will be conducted in Toyamago region in Iida city, Nagano prefecture.

(1) Prologue
1. Guidance: What do we learn from a social research?

(2) Method of a social survey
1. How to do a social survey (1) the meaning of conducting research in rural districts (TSUCHIYA) (April 10th)
2. How to do a social survey (2) Method of qualitative research, including interview method (ASAOKA) (April 17th)
3. How to do a social survey (3) Method of research in rural districts (TAKEMOTO) (April 24th)
4. How to do a social survey (4) techniques for interviewing (SAWA) (May 1st)

(3) Introduction of Iida city, Nagano prefecture

(5) Preparation

【Main research】Main research (Three days within August 3th ~August 6th . The survey will be conducted in the weekends. The schedule will be adjusted.)※There will be a possibility of late(midnight) returning. )
*On August 3th , course participants will work as a staff for the puppet show festival.
Prerequisites
Course participants are required to do a field report (present the results of the research) at Iida city.
Students desired to take the course in “Internship (Iida city)” will be required to have an interview with faculties individually.
