Course description
〔Japanese History,This lecture will be discussed in Japanese.〕The purpose of this lecture is to understand the characteristics of the ancient times and the medieval times.I will lecture the process of change of cities and money system.Students will learn historical thinking from diverse viewpoints including politics, society, economy and culture.
Expected Learning
(1)To understand the process how the ancient times turn intoe the medieval times
(2)To learn historical thought from various viewpoints.
(3)To understand that history is easily distorted by future generations.

week 1 Impression of the Heian period and the Kamakura period ;which future generations have
week 2 Overview of history the 8th century-the 14th century Japan :focus on cities and money
week 3 The ancient city in East Asia
week 4 The formation of the ancient city in Japan
week 5 The formation of the medieval city "Kyoto"
week 6 Sanitary conditions in the Heian period(1) Treatment of human waste, and agricultural technology
week 7 Sanitary conditions in the Heian period(2) Abandonment of Corpses, and Funeral Customs
week 8 Rituals in the city"Kyoto" :The origins of Goryoe(御霊会)
week 9 The purpose of currency issue by The Ritsuryo state
week 10 The influence of currency issue by The Ritsuryo state
week 11 "In Kind" Money" in the Heian period
week 12 The reform of the taxation system and the monetary system in the Heian period
week 13 The inflow of Chinese coins in the Kamakura period
week 14 Money circulation in the Kamakura period

Assessment/Grading
Final Examinationn: 90% ,“the opinion cards”: approximately 10%.
“The opinion card” is a card which the students should submit answering the lecturer’s questions as necessary.
