Course description |
The purpose of this course is to provide students with opportunities to read a wide variety of topics in scientific and technological fields in English. Students will also learn how to extract information and critically read academic journals and articles. |
Expected Learning |
The goal of the course is for students to develop their critical thinking skills and improve reading speed by reading a variety of academic texts in English. Students will have opportunities to share opinions on these texts through discussion with classmates. |
Course schedule |
Students will learn the following: how to evaluate written information, how to synthesize this information with their own knowledge of the topic, as well as developing a variety of advanced reading skills to aid reading comprehension. Below is a prospective course outline. There are no required textbooks for this course, but handouts will be provided in class. In order to collect and organize class handouts, students will be expected to bring their own A4 binder to every lesson. |

Attendance: 15% (students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive a credit for the course), Participation: 15%, Reading Skills Assignments: 50%, Final Exam: 20%. |
