Course description
This course aims to develop second-year students’ reading skills, enabling them to read more advanced English texts. Students are given the opportunity to choose the genre of their reading materials among a variety of topics. Texts are expected to be more complex in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and style than those encountered in Integrated English. TOEFL ITP Test is given to all students during the course.

The English Reading courses are divided into three groups. Students are requested to submit their preferred choice from among the groups before registration. 

English Reading (A): Science and Technology
In ER (A), students read articles relating to issues in science and technology.
English Reading (B): Global News
In ER (B), students read about topics relating to worldwide issues through a variety of news media.
English Reading (C): Culture and Society
In ER (C), students read articles focusing upon various aspects of culture and society.

Expected Learning
Objectives:
Students should attain level B2 in a variety of English skills as stated in the CEFR-J, a CEFR-based framework for ELT in Japan. To attain the objectives, during the course students will be expected to:

1. Become familiar with a variety of reading techniques such as skimming, scanning and summarizing.
2. Learn to read English texts both for comprehension and critical analysis.
3. Become independent learners, developing reading skills that can be used independently outside of class.
