Course description
Course Outline: This course aims to help students learn the basic structure of an English paragraph.
Expected Learning
Objectives:
・ Students should learn the function of a topic sentence and how to write a paragraph.
・ Students should learn to use appropriate words, transitions and structures to write clearly and effectively.
・ Students should submit 3 to 5 assignments of paragraph writing, of around 100 to 200 words in length. It is recommended that students submit first and final drafts of each assignment.
Course schedule
Please make sure that students purchase the specified textbook and bring it to Class 1.
We will decide on the seating arrangements for the course in Class 1.

Class 1 10/12 Introduction to the course, Unit 1: Process writing, paragraph format, paragraph structure
Class 2 10/19 Unit 2: Creating topic sentences. Discussion. Capitalization and punctuation
Class 3 10/26 Unit 3: Improving topic sentences. Listing activities & adj. Verb tense and time expression
Class 4 11/2 Unit 4: Creating supporting sentences. Free-writing. Present tense and plural “s”
Class 5 11/9 Unit 5: Improving supporting sentences. Listing supporting examples. Subject-verb agreement
Class 6 11/16 Unit 6: Creating detail sentences. Listing details. Past tense
Class 7 11/23 Unit 7: Improving detail sentences. Word maps. “Be” verbs
Class 8 11/30 Unit 8: Creating concluding sentences. Outlining. Time prepositions
Class 9 12/7 Unit 9: Format and structure review
Class10 12/14 Unit 10: Unity. Listing. Coordinating conjunctions. Checking a partner’s unity
Class11 12/21 Unit 11: Coherence. Organizing your paragraph. Adjectives and adverbs.
Group reading for coherence. ※ Class will be cancelled on Dec 15 (Sat).
Class12 1/11 Unit 12: Cohesion. Pair interviews. Pronouns. Checking a partner’s cohesion
Class13 1/25 Unit 13: Editing techniques. Peer editing
Class14 2/1 Unit 14: Style review (Unity, Coherence, Cohesion )
