Course description |
This course aims to help students learn the basic structure of an English paragraph. |
Expected Learning |
Objectives: ・ Students should learn the function of a topic sentence and how to write a paragraph. ・ Students should learn to use appropriate words, transitions and structures to write clearly and effectively. ・ Students should submit 3 to 5 assignments of paragraph writing, of around 100 to 200 words in length. It is recommended that students submit first and final drafts of each assignment. |
Course schedule |
Students will gain a practical understanding of basic academic writing skills by learning the following: how to plan and structure academic paragraphs, how to use information from outside sources to support ideas, how to peer and self-edit paragraphs, and how to write paragraphs under exam conditions. Students will analyze a variety of model paragraphs and submit six pieces of written work (Paragraph Task 1, two drafts of Paragraph Task 2, two drafts of Paragraph Task 3, and a final exam). Below is a prospective outline of the course. Class 1: Course Introduction Class 2: Paragraph Structure 1: Topic Sentences Class 3: Paragraph Structure 2: Supporting and Concluding Sentences Class 4: Paragraph Structure 3: Coherence and Grammar Class 5: Peer Editing of Essay Paragraph Class 6: Paragraph Structure 1: Introduction and Thesis Class 7: Paragraph Structure 2: Body Paragraphs and Conclusion Class 8: Paraphrasing and Summarizing Class 9: Peer Editing of Paragraph Task 2 (1st Draft) Class 10: Argumentative Paragraphs: Introduction and Thesis Class 11: Argumentative Paragraphs: Paragraph Structure Class 12: In-text Citation and Creating a Works Cited List Class 13: Peer Editing of Paragraph Task 3 (1st Draft) Class 14: Exam Paragraph Writing Class 15: Final Exam |
