Course description
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and the basic communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Toward this goal, students need to take both “Spanish for Beginners I” and “Spanish for Beginners II” in the same year.
Expected Learning
1. Acquisition of the pronunciation, spelling, meaning, and grammatical functions of the basic words and phrases.
2. Acquisition of the infinite and present forms of the basic verbs.
3. Acquisition of the rudimentary oral and reading/writing skills in communication such as greetings, self-introduction, description, question and answer, and request.
4. General knowledge of the Hispanic world.

Week 2 Lesson 1:Numerals, gender and number of nouns,
Week 3 Lesson 1:Articles
Week 4 Lesson 2:Nominative pronouns, verb “ser”
Week 5 Lesson 2:Affirmative/negative/interrogative sentences, Countries of the Hispanic world
Week 6 Lesson 3:Present indicative forms of regular verbs
Week 7 Lesson 3:Present indicative forms of regular verbs, adverbs
Week 8 Lesson 4:Verbs “hay” and “estar”
Week 9 Lesson 4:Demonstratives, adverbs of place
Week 10 Lesson 5:Verb “tener”, adjectives, history of the Hispanic world
Week 11 Lesson 5:Possessive pronouns
Week 12 Lesson 6:Present indicative forms of irregular verbs I
Week 13 Lesson 6:Present indicative forms of irregular verbs II
Week 14 Lesson 1-6:Review
Week 15 Final exam

The pace of the class may be changed according to the progress of the students.
Prerequisites
It is desirable to take the classes of “Spanish for Beginners II” and “Intermediate Spanish” to acquire comprehensively the basic skill of the language.

Final exam 70%
Class participation 30%
Students absent more than five times are not qualified to take the final exam. Students who do not participate in the class activities and fail to do the homework are not considered to attend the class.
