Course description
History of Chemical Engineering and recent development of Chemical Engineering are investigated by lecture and discussion based on report from students.
Expected Learning
Course schedule
1. Background and importance of “Chemical Engineering”
1.1. History of Chemical Engineering
(1) Haber-Bosch process (Method of directly synthesizing ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen)
(2) Gasoline production process
1.2. Four important “Pollution-related illnesses” in Japan and the contribution of separation process on the solution of this subjects
(1) Minamata disease : mercury
(2) Niigata Minamata disease : mercury
Mercury is highly volatile element, still difficult subjects to separate from flue gas. New production process for NaOH without mercury were developed.
(3) Itai-itai disease : Cadmium emission, Cd ion in sewer water and dust emission
(4) Asthma in Yokkaichi : Sulfite gas, Nitrogen oxide and dust, fine particles
New Environmental subjects

2. New technology about separation from polluted water and gas
1) Liquid-liquid extraction, emulsion dispersion (oil in water, water/oil/water)
2) Adsorption, Zeolite and other adsorbed material (ferrocyanide)
Example, Fukusima radioactive material Cesium
Environmental standard = 5000 becquerel : the number of atoms / second

3. New concepts for chemical production process engineering,
/ Closed systems
Separation and recycling of unreacted raw feedstock
/ Zero emission
l, aggregation and sedimentation etc.

4. Presentation and discussion about "Chemical Engineering"
