Course description |
In this freshman's course, "stiffness", "strength", and "toughness" of the engineering materials will be treated in relevance to the atomic/molecular structures of the materials. The target is to construct the students' fundamental understanding of materials science and engineering. |
Expected Learning |
(1) capability of explaining atomic structure of four types of engineering materials (2) capability of explaining the interrelationship among structure, property, processing and performance of engineering materials (3) capability of expalining the microscopic mechanisms governing the mechanical response of the materials to the externally applied stresses (4) capability of displaying schematic diagrams showing relationship between strain and stress and explaining typical materials property with adequate material parameters (5) capability of explaining the mechanisms of plasticity, brittle fracture and fatigue (6) capability of utilyzing adequate selection principles for optimizing materials strength and safe design |
Course schedule |
Topical themes of each class will be as follows; (1) materials and human civilization (2) availability and applicability of materials (3) basic classes of engineering materials: ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites (4) key factors controlling the materials properties (5) elasticity, elastic moduli, and stiffness of the materials (6) crystals and crystallography (7) crystallographic planes and directions in metallic crystals (8) Plasticity, yield stress, and dislocation models (9) fracture and toughness (10) fatigue of materials (11) creep and its kinetic equation (12) optimal design and materials selection |
Prerequisites |
Basic background in mathematics and physics might be necessary. This subject provides fundamentals linking to the sophomore and junior courses, Engineering Materials I and II. |
Required Text(s) and Materials |
