In this class, condensation reactions of carbonyl compounds, chemistry of phenols, chemistry of epoxides and ethers are discussed. |

Although organic chemistry involves huge numbers of versatile reactions, the reaction patterns of organic molecules are only 3 categories, i.e. ionic reaction, radical reaction, and concerted reaction. This class mainly deals with ionic reactions, which involves only 2 controlling factors; polarity of bonds depending on electron negativities, and steric factor of the molecules. These bond cleaving and forming reactions are governed by removal of electrons. Therefore, this field of chemistry is constructed by very simple elemental factors. I believe that the key point for perfect understanding of this field is that you think about the reaction as if you were the reactant molecule. I will give a lecture described below and I hope you will enjoy the organic chemistry in this class. Lecture 1: opening talk: how to understand organic reactions. Lecture 2: synthesis of alcohols and thiols. Lecture 3: synthesis of alcohols and thiols. Lecture 4: ethers, epoxides and sulfides. Lecture 5: aldehyde and ketons. Lecture 6: aldehyde and ketons. Lecture 7: intermediate exam. Lecture 8: carbonic acids. Lecture 9: carbonyl compounds and nucleophilic acylations. Lecture 10: carbonyl compounds and nucleophilic acylations. Lecture 11: alpha substitution reactions of carbonyl compounds. Lecture 12: alpha substitution reactions of carbonyl compounds. Lecture 13: carbonyl condensations. Lecture 14: pretest for final exam. Lecture 15: final exam. |

All students who wish to join this class are required to have credits of Organic Chemistry I and II |

Assessment/Grading |
Two Examinations (80 points in total), attendance (10 point) and homeworks and reports (10 point). The grade points are evaluated as follows: S: >90 points, A: 90-80 points, B: 80-70 points, and C: 70-60 points. |
