Course description
In this class, you learn physical chemistry in exercise form which is essential in the field of organic materials chemistry. Contents are mainly in line with the thermodynamics, and include equilibrium state, molecular motion, electrochemistry and chemical reaction rate. Goal of this class is to solve a wide range of exercises related to these items and to learn the academic and practical achievement through commentaries from the answers.
Expected Learning
You can understand a basic theory of equilibrium thermodynamics such as phase equilibrium with one- and multi-component systems with/without chemical changes and the basis of the electrochemical equilibrium from exercises.
Course schedule
1 : Guidance , Review questions of physical chemistry exercises I
2 : Atkins Physical Chemistry , First volume (Part I: Equilibrium)
(1) Physical transformation of pure substances (phase diagram, phase transition and phase stability, liquid surface)
(2) Simple mixtures (thermodynamics of mixtures, the nature of solutions, activities)
3: First examination
4: Atkins Physical Chemistry , First volume (Part I: Equilibrium)
(3) Phase diagrams (phase and component, two-component systems, a variety of phase diagram)
(4) Chemical equilibrium (spontaneous chemical reactions, Le Chaterier’s principle, acids and bases)
(5) Electrochemical equilibrium (thermodynamics of ions in solution, batteries, standard potentials and applications)
5 : Atkins Physical Chemistry , Second volume (Part III: Changes)
(1) Molecular motions (movement of the gasses, the movement of ions in liquid, diffusions)
(2) Chemical reaction rates (interpretation chemical reaction kinetics, the rate equations)
6: A final examination (full range of above 2 and 3)
