Course description |
Polymer materials are indispensable for our daily life. This course will provide an overview of polymer chemistry and the basics of polymer synthesis via chain polymerization. |
Expected Learning |
Students will acquire the concept of “polymer” and the knowledge of the polymer synthesis via chain polymerization. This course would be essential for better understanding of "Polymer Chemistry II" and "Physics of Polymers and Texiles I and II". |
Course schedule |
This course will cover Chapters 1, 2 and 6 (mainly Section 1, 3 , 4, and 5) in the textbook. The approximate order of topics to be covered and examination is given below. Chapter 1: Features and history of polymers What is a “Macromolecule” and a "Polymer"?; General overview of polymer science Chapter 2: Chemical Structure of Macromolecules First-order structure (sequence of repeating units, stereoregularity); Molecular weight; Analytical methods Nomenclature Chapter 6, Section 1: Types of Polymerization Classification of polymerization reaction; Difference between chain-growth and step polymerization Chapter 6, Sections 3-1 and 3-2: Radical Polymerization General feature and mechanism of radical polymerization; Polymerization methods, Copolymerization Midterm exam Chapter 6, Sections 3-3: Cationic Polymerization General feature and mechanism of cationic polymerization Chapter 6, Sections 3-4: Anionic Polymerization General feature and mechanism of anionic polymerization Chapter 6, Sections 3-5 and 5-2: Coordination Polymerization General feature and mechanism of coordination polymerization; Polymerization catalysts, Control of stereoregularity Chapter 6, Sections 3-6: Ring-opening Polymerization General feature of ring-opening polymerization; Polymerization via radical, cationic, and anionic mechanism Chapter 6, Sections 4-1, 4-2, 5-1, 5-3: “Control” in Polymrization Living polymerization; Control of first-order structure in macromolecules |
Prerequisites |
Knowledge of organic chemistry is essential for understanding polymer chemistry. Students are required to understand the topics in "Organic Chemistry I, II, and III". |

There will be midterm exam (worth 45% of the grade) and final exam (worth 45% of the grade). Homework assignments will together count 10% of the grade. |
