Course description
On the basis of basic organic chemistry, this course provides students with overview of functional groups including halogens, hydroxyl group, and carbonyl groups in organic compounds.

Expected Learning
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to explain structures, physicochemical properties, and reactivity of usual functional groups.
Course schedule
Week 1: Introduction of this course and summary of basic organic chemistry
Week 2: Nucleophilic addition reactions of aldehydes and ketones
Week 3: Nucleophilic substitution reactions of carboxylic acid derivatives
Week 4: Hydride reduction and Grignard reaction of carbonyl compounds
Week 5: Stereochemistry
Week 6: Nucleophilic substitution reactions of haloalkanes
Week 7: Elimination reactions of haloalkanes
Week 8: Reactions of aliphatic alcohols
Week 9: Reactions of ethers including epoxides.
Week 10: Electrophilic addition reactions of alkenes
Week 11: Aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions
Week 12: Enolates and their equivalent
Week 13: Conjugate addition of enolates
Week 14: Summary of functional group chemistry
Week 15: Final examination
