On the basis of basic organic chemistry, this course provides students with overview of functional groups including halogens, hydroxyl group, and carbonyl groups in organic compounds. |

Week 1: Introduction of this course and summary of basic organic chemistry Week 2: Nucleophilic addition reactions of aldehydes and ketones Week 3: Nucleophilic substitution reactions of carboxylic acid derivatives Week 4: Hydride reduction and Grignard reaction of carbonyl compounds Week 5: Stereochemistry Week 6: Nucleophilic substitution reactions of haloalkanes Week 7: Elimination reactions of haloalkanes Week 8: Reactions of aliphatic alcohols Week 9: Reactions of ethers including epoxides. Week 10: Electrophilic addition reactions of alkenes Week 11: Aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions Week 12: Enolates and their equivalent Week 13: Conjugate addition of enolates Week 14: Summary of functional group chemistry Week 15: Final examination |
