Expected Learning |
To be able to explain the relationship between macroscopic and microscopic states. To understand the concept of ensemble and to be able to use various ensembles suitably. To understand the concept of entropy in statistical mechanics. |

Week 1: Review of thermodynamics (temperature, work) Week 2: Review of thermodynamics (energy, first law, second law) Week 3: Macroscopic and microscopic state, concept of ensemble, energy levels of linear harmonic oscillator Weeks 4, 5, 6: Microcanonical ensemble and canonical ensemble Weeks 7, 8, 9: Entropy Weeks 10, 11, 12: Definition of temperature, pressure, and chemical potential, grandcanonical ensemble Weeks 13, 14: Some examples Week 15: Review and examination |
