Course description |
This course deals with the relationship between language and thought, focusing on "Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis" or the linguistic relativity hypothesis. Lectures will cover the historical backgrounds, basic concepts concerning Whorfian effects, some premises and empirical studies to support this hypothesis. |
Expected Learning |
Students taking this course are expected to: 1. understand characteristics of the Japanese language compared with other languages, 2. understand the basics of Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, 3. deepen the thought on the relationship between language, thought, and culture, 4. foster the ability to write what they have learned in their own words, 5. obtain knowledge about experiments using human subjects. |
