Course description
Bioprocess engineering is a technology system needed to increase products concentration of interest, enhance processing capabilities by using microoraganisms, and/or optimize biological processes.
Expected Learning
We can lean techniques for control of microbial growth and effective utilization of microbial metabolism.
Course schedule
Week 1: Introduction of bioprocess
Week2: Basic biochemistry (review): characteristics of the microorganism
Week 3: Basic biochemistry (review): polymer and cell function and metabolic function
Week 4: Derivation of enzyme kinetics
Week 5: Enzyme kinetics with the inhibition
Week 6: Microbial growth, metabolism and dynamics
Week 7: Midterm exam
Week 8: Brewing process such as sake, beer and miso
Week 9: Bioreactor with immobilized biocatalyst
Week 10: Engineering operations in the fermentation processes
Week 11: Application of bioreactor to wastewater treatment
Week 12: Separation and purification of bio-products
Week 13: Genetic engineering Introduction
Week 14: Clean-up technology of soil and groundwater by bioremediation
Week 15: Final exam
