Course description |
This course highlights the basic knowledge and technical options for "Sustainable Utilization of Biological Resources", and discusses how to establish balanced nutrient cycling systems by reducing environmental impacts and by utilizing organic resources in different agroecosystems. Participants discuss the potentials and limitations of sustainable agriculture through practicing in small garden plots/containers. |
Expected Learning |
1. To understand various indicators of sustainability in biological resource uses, 2. To understand the issues/problems of organic resource uses though gardening practices, 3. To discuss various issues on biological resource uses, especially nutrient cycling, in Japan and developing regions. |
Course schedule |
1. Course introduction: How to dispose/reuse garbage. 2. Nutrient cycling and environmental impacts in rural ecosystems 3. Soils and fertilizers in sustainable agriculture 4. Use of livestock manure 5. Compost and Bokashi 6. Weeds, mulch, and covercrops 7. Biochar 8. Pest and disease 9 to 10. Examples of simple environmental surveys of lowland and upland agroecosystems 11 to 13. Examples of environmental impacts and sustainable production in developing regions 14 to 15. Conclusions: Potentials, limitations, and sustainability indicators in organic resource utilization |
Prerequisites |
This class contains fieldwork. Please prepare for farm works: a field note with a pen, a hat or a cap, drinking water, working shoes in muddy or dusty conditions, and anti-mosquito and anti-sunburn (if you worry). |
Required Text(s) and Materials |
No textbook is used. Materials in PDF may be provided for participants. |

Message from instructor(s) |
This course aims to learn "sustainable" utilization but we may learn "unsustainable" uses of biological resources in the field. I really hope you enjoy and discuss how to improve our ideas and practices. |
