Course description
Dr. Tagaya and Dr. Yaoi, who are part-time lecturers, take charge of this subject.

Part 1: Dr. Mitsuo Tagaya
Date : Oct. 18, 19 Place :6-21
Intracellular organelles, which contain unique enzymes and proteins, allow eukaryotic cells, by exerting individual functions, to survive, proliferate, and differentiate. However, organelles are not completely independent, but rather closely communicate with each other though membrane contact sites. Recent studies have been disclosing the mechanism and function of membrane contacts and the significance of membrane contact sites for various diseases. This course covers topics from the fundamental biological membranes and leading edge research of membrane contacts.

Part 2: Dr. Katsuro Yaoi
Date : Nov. 6
Place :
Expected Learning
Part 1: Dr. Tagaya
Students can ① explain the basic architecture of cell membranes, ② explain the role of organelles, ③ understand organelle communication (lipid transfer, Ca2+ homeostasis, and others) through membrane contact sites.
Course schedule
Part 1: Dr. Tagaya
In this course, the following topics will be stated, explained, and discussed: ① The architecture of biological membranes: lipids, membrane proteins, microdomains formed on membranes, and so on; ② Intracellular organelles: the structure and function of organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, peroxisomes, lysosomes, lipid droplets and others); ③ The role of the membrane contact between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, and diseases related to the dysfunction of the contact; ④The role of the membrane contact between the endoplasmic reticulum and organelles other than mitochondria.

Part 2: Dr. Yaoi
