Course description
The objective of this course is to understand the forest soil properties and the rule of forest soil in forest ecosystems. Students will learn fundamentals and applications of forest soil properties of physical, chemical and biological.
Expected Learning
Students need to gain knowledge of important function of forest soil in forest ecosystems.
Course schedule
Students need to attend the guidance for the course at the first class.
Students learn the following research methods by the lecture and student presentation and discussion.
The aims of forest soil and soil sciences.
Physical properties of forest soil
Chemical properties of forest soil
Biological properties of forest soil
Nutrient cycle of forest ecosystems and soil
Interaction between vegetation and soil
Forest soil survey and site classification
Discussion of the rule of forest soil in forest ecosystems
Prerequisites
It is hoped that you will take the advanced forest ecology I.
Required Text(s) and Materials
The handouts will be provided. If you have not learned about fundamental forest soil science, you should learn by yourself before this course.

Assessment/Grading
Attendance and presentation (30%), report of forest soil science (50%) and the discussion in the classes (20%). We do not evaluate the scores of a person who attends less than 70% of this course.

This course is not only a lecture of advanced forest soils. We will also discuss the relationships between forest or natural soil and natural resource and environment conservation.
